Europe, 2025.

Britain – and the European Union – is struggling to remain civilised. Unemployment is high, ethnic and religious tensions are rising sharply, crime is skyrocketing, the value of money is falling and the whole system is on the verge of collapse. Across the continent, united only in name, countless individuals struggle to keep themselves afloat and survive for a few more days.

But weakness invites attack and covetous eyes set their sights on the remains of Europe’s industry and trained population. As a military juggernaut descends on an unprepared continent, the remains of Britain’s once-proud military must fight to defend their country ... or watch helplessly as Britain falls into darkness.

The Fall of Night edition by Christopher Nuttall Alex Claw Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The Old Russian Bear has taken enough garbage from the European Union, Islamists and the West. This novel lays out an entirely possible war plan for driving the Americans out of Europe and the political posturing that would result in a militarily weakened E.U. coalition. I would love to see a follow up novel.

The Fall of Night edition by Christopher Nuttall Alex Claw Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I am a fan of Nuttall's work, so let me get that on record if I come across as a bit critical. Nuttall claims to have written this book at the rate of 15,000 word per day, a prodigious rate of work. I believe him. The book reads like a work in progress, as if he wrote it at speed and then didn't have the energy left for a proper edit. Which is a shame because the bones of the thing are quite good. I did find the various errors off putting. Ok, nit picking perhaps, but I want to see what he can do if he takes his time.
But oh boy, what a fast, thrilling ride he gives us. In the not too distant future a Putinesq Russian leader decides to attack a somnolent and supine Europe. He imagines a tie up between Algeria and Russia, a one two punch to Western Europe, that is all too believable. His description of the near future of a Europe tied helplessly in knots of her own device reflects current social and political trends. The problems of unemployment, Muslim immigration and general decay and lassitude are all too real
The battle scenes are Nuttall's best accomplishment. He handles theater level battles with skill, and puts in the microscopic small unit details to give us a personal investment in the story. His characters are by and large scantily sketched out, which is a real problem for a novelist. We need to care about the people in the story in order to be invested in it. Plumbing up the English soldier and his wife and giving them more depth would have helped.
This works as a cautionary tale for our leaders. As someone once said, 'the problem with becoming civilized is that sooner or later some guys who eat raw dog meat will come along and take it all away'. Western culture still does not realize that the world is a dangerous place, always was, always will be. Let's hope some one in Parliament is reading Nuttall.
Is Nuttall the new Herman Wouk? Not yet, but I am reading his stuff as fast as he can write it, or nearly. He is fast.
So there's two ways to approach this book

1. As strictly a novel.

2. As political piece calling attention to the state of European defense.

To the first

It's not the greatest novel of all time. One of the things that it suffers from is again the Russians virtually never fail at anything despite the simple friction that even really good forces face against vastly more inferior foes than even a degraded Europe. Everything comes up roses if you're Russian and they're pretty much unstoppable. Some characters are pretty well fleshed out, others with similar amounts of involvment in the story are somewhere around two to two and a half dimensional.

As a political piece however, it is actually not at all bad. It points out the extreme and fairly intelligent conclusion of where European defense planning may actually be going. Hyper-expensive vanity projects completed in very small numbers, decades behind when they were actually needed, simultaneously relying on the US for much of NATO's combat power, while antagonizing and often exploiting same. Disinterested and detached civilian populations that cannot be bothered to recognize they exist in a world that is peaceful because of large fences and well drilled military forces on their behalf, not in spite of same.

I give it three stars because as a stand-alone novel it's just that, an okay novel and a good waste of time, that results in a downer ending with legitimately bad dudes getting to do a touchdown dance on the grave of freedom in Europe. The good guys fail nobly at every turn. There's not much novel, and it's what I'd call "functional entertainment" level writing (think Tom Clancy vs Joseph Conrad, it's writing to transmit words vs writing to be clever).

However again it is much like the Battle of Dorking in terms of literature. It is not supposed to be strictly entertaining, nor strictly realistic. It has a point to make and will tilt the odds and direct the story accordingly to ensure that message is heard. And in that context I would recommend it if you have an interest in modern defense planning.
Chris says he wrote this a few years back and it just rushed out of him. The story is about a European world where those in the military are looked down upon, and that money in the military budget really needs to be used for some feel good social experiment. The good young citizens of Germany, France, England all sit around the camp fire and sing Kumbaya and have nothing to worry about. Oh, the Russians, nah, they are long time finished. But in Russia a new Stalin/Putin has arisen and no longer will Russia be ignored or pushed around. This book is about what happens when Russia has had enough. As to those in Germany, France, England who reject that force can be used to occupy their country, who say we can change the world by holding a protest march, and "they " the occupiers have to change, well let us see how well your body resists bullets. This book shows what can happen when a nation ignores the old saying "Si vis pacem, para bellum." As to "Where's the USA?" the book points out what happens when the US gets tired of being attacked by the citizens of Europe and leaves. Why should the US bail them out a 3rd time? I could not put it down. A cautionary tale of what the future might portend.
The Old Russian Bear has taken enough garbage from the European Union, Islamists and the West. This novel lays out an entirely possible war plan for driving the Americans out of Europe and the political posturing that would result in a militarily weakened E.U. coalition. I would love to see a follow up novel.
